A truck driver, Garuba Lawal, has been arrested by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad, Lagos State Police Command, for allegedly diverting 600 bags of flour belonging to the Nigeria Flour Mills.
Newsmen learnt that the 36-year-old Kwara State indigene had been asked to deliver the goods to a bakery in Ibadan, Oyo State, on his first day at work.
He was said to have been approached by some men, who promised to give him N2m if he could divert the goods.
The police said the suspect agreed to the deal after which the goods were diverted to Sagamu, Ogun State.
The suspect, who was asked to wait for his share of the loot in his hometown in Ilorin, Kwara State, reportedly grew weary and dismantled the container, selling it for N450,000.
He was thereafter arrested by the police.
The suspect, in his statement to the police, claimed he was approached by one Ismaila.
He said, “He asked if I had got N2m in my life and what would I do with it? I answered him that I would quit the job.
“He introduced me to two of his friends. He later took me to a corner and brought out a cowrie. He told me that I would have to swallow it as a sign of bond that anybody that divulged the secret between us would die instantly.
“I took the cowrie and swallowed it. Immediately I did that, I lost my senses and started obeying everything he said.”
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Olarinde Famous-Cole, said investigations were ongoing into the incident.
